Marin County is finally seeing the light when it comes to a state-of-the-art pool cleaning system. I’m proud to announce the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center (OMJCC) will in less than two weeks install the Ultraviolet, or UV, sanitizing technology to kill chloramines as well reduce the amount of chlorine used in the pool.
When pool bacteria (sweat, oils, and urine — which is as far as I’ll go) bonds with chlorine, you get chloramines, or better known as that strong chlorine smell.
Chlorine doesn’t kill all bacteria. But a UV system will. I wanted to know more about the whole process and found this great article about UV pool sanitizing systems written by Aquatics International Magazine.
I was additional surprised to find out the installation is so simple, and small. The units, which look like a wide pipe I could lift up, are plumbed in-line or installed as a by-pass unit with the pool’s filtration system. So I won’t even see it, but I won’t be getting a sun-tan like I thought.
I am most excited about the fact the JCC will be able to keep the chlorine down to the lowest possible legal limit. This means a lot of great things on small to big levels, from less skin and eye irritation, to reducing our energy usage and chemical impact on the world. That correlates with my goals.
Tomorrow, I am going to talk about how to keep your hair from getting fried and/or how to remove the chlorine smell off your body. It will be a smaller entry since, I only have to discuss half of what I had planned in “light” of how the new UV system reduces chemical impact. Ha ha, on several accounts.

The J is really going to have a great advantage when this system is put in next week!! It is such a smart great thing to have. I can not wait to say that we have this system when booking all your lessons Ms. Tina!! The JCC facility now will not only have some of the best instructors in the Bay but a healthy, clean pool (great learning environment) to offer the community as well!!
